How pricing works
Five answers, in the order people ask them.
What decides the price
The same 200 amp panel can cost very different amounts in two houses. These are what move it.
Where the panel sits: an open basement wall or a finished closet
The meter base and mast: reused or replaced
The wiring already there: old, undersized or aluminum
How far the new circuits have to run
Permit and inspection fees, which differ by city
What the estimate includes, and what it doesn't
A written quote with every line itemized: equipment, labor, the permit fee and the utility steps. It stands for 30 days.
Included: panel, breakers, labor, permit, inspection and the utility scheduling
Not included: drywall repair and paint, trenching, equipment you supply
If we find a wiring problem behind the cover, we stop, show you and quote it first
What happens at the visit
One electrician comes in a window we give you. They measure the load, open the panel cover, check the meter base and grounding, and photograph all of it. The visit has a set fee, credited to the work if you book within 30 days. We don't price a panel on the spot: the number comes after we have seen the inside.
After hours
Panel and service work is scheduled Monday to Friday, so there is no night rate. If something is sparking or burning, call 911 first. We schedule the repair the next working day.
When you get the number
In writing after the visit and before any work starts, as a price for the job as quoted. If the job changes, you approve the change in writing before we do it.
The visit
What we measure before we name a number
A panel can't be priced from the street. At the visit we measure what the house draws, so the new panel is the right size, and we look at the things that move a price.
We check
The load: what the house draws now and what you're adding
The panel: brand, age, free breaker spaces, scorch marks
The meter base, mast and grounding
The path for new wire: attic, crawl space or finished wall

Price questions
What does the visit cost, and is it credited?
The load check and quote visit has a set fee, quoted when you book. Book the work within 30 days and the fee comes off the job. If you don't, it covers the time we spent measuring your house and writing the quote.
What raises the price of a panel job?
Four things: a panel that has to move, a meter base or mast that has to be replaced, old wiring that has to be corrected before it is connected, and a finished wall that has to open. The visit tells us which apply, and the quote lists each as its own line.
What isn't in the price?
Drywall repair and paint, trenching, equipment you supply, and sales tax where it applies. If we find a wiring problem behind the cover, we stop, show you and quote it before we go on.
