Questions about panels and service
Short answers. The quote after the visit is what counts.
Does my panel need replacing?
Not always. A panel that is full, shows scorch marks, carries a brand with a history of breakers that fail to trip, such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco, or can't take a new heat pump or EV charger is a candidate. The load check settles it: we measure what the house draws, open the cover and photograph what is inside before we recommend anything.
Do I need a permit, and who pulls it?
Panel and service work needs a permit from your city or town and an inspection before the power goes back on. We apply for it, and its fee is a separate line on your quote. Rules differ from one city to the next, so we tell you what yours asks for.
How long does a panel replacement take, and will the power be off?
Plan for the power to be off for part of one working day on a standard swap. Your quote gives the window. A new meter base or service upgrade involves the utility, which sets its own schedule for the disconnect and reconnect.
Do I need a bigger panel for an EV charger or heat pump?
It depends on the load check. Many houses can take one new 240-volt circuit. Two or three big loads together, such as a heat pump, a charger and an induction range, often need a larger service. We run the numbers before we quote and put the result in writing.
What does the visit cost, and is it credited?
The load check and quote visit has a set fee, quoted when you book. Book the work within 30 days and the fee comes off the job. If you don't, it covers the time we spent measuring your house and writing the quote.
What raises the price of a panel job?
Four things: a panel that has to move, a meter base or mast that has to be replaced, old wiring that has to be corrected before it is connected, and a finished wall that has to open. The visit tells us which apply, and the quote lists each as its own line.
What isn't in the price?
Drywall repair and paint, trenching, equipment you supply, and sales tax where it applies. If we find a wiring problem behind the cover, we stop, show you and quote it before we go on.
Are you licensed and insured, and how do I check?
Chambliss Electric works under a Colorado master electrician license and carries insurance; ask us for the certificate. The license line in the footer links to the state's lookup page, where you can search the number yourself.
Do you do emergency work?
No. Panel and service jobs are scheduled Monday to Friday, so there is no after-hours line and no night rate. If you smell burning or see sparks, scorching or water near wiring, turn off the breaker if it is safe and call 911 for fire. Then call us the next working morning.
How do I send photos of my panel and meter?
Text them to (970) 555-0100, or use the link in the quote form. Send one of the meter and one of the panel door closed, and one of the label inside the door if it opens easily. Please don't take the cover off.
